Marcasite and Silver Bracelet

Marcaste bracelet A nice example of a marcasite bracelet, we posted one out this morning.  7 1/2 inches long, it’s the standard size for a ladies bracelet.  It is made up of multiple links or sections and is patterned with squares and semi-circles and flowing lines.  Nice and attractive and substantial enough to make a nice present especially when presented in a gift box.

See more marcasite bracelets here or look at our full marcasite jewellery range.  For non-marcasite silver bracelets click here.

Garnet Jewellery – The Birthstone for January

Garnet pendantThe birthstone for january is garnet – a deep red gemstone and represents faith both for the wearer and the giver and is supposed to give the wearer good fortune and health.  If deep sleep and protection from nightmares is also what is needed then give a piece of garnet jewellery because that is what they are thought to give!

So, if you know someone with a birthday in january, give them a piece of jewellery with their birthstone – it’s sure to go down well.

Pink Sapphire Jewellery

Pink sapphire pendantSapphire is known mainly for its beautiful blue colour but other colours are available and often rarer than the more famous blue.  However, red sapphire doesn’t exist…because that is ruby (it’s the mineral composition that makes the gemstone not the colour).

I, personally, like the pink sapphire – it’s delicate, subtle, beautiful and reasonably priced, too.

We have a few items on Milton Gems – see our pink sapphire category in the jewellery themes page.

Body Jewellery / Belly Bars Added

Well, we’ve added a dozen belly bars to our body jewellery category now.  All are silver fitted to 316L surgical steel bars so they’re safe to wear unlike cheaper belly bars.  A lot have cubic zirconia stones which really catch the light – if you’re in a club they shine brightly which is always a bonus.

We have two pages of the belly bars at the moment – belly bar page 1 and belly bar page 2.

Body Jewellery Added to Milton Gems

Just a quick message – I’m in the process of putting on some body jewellery on Milton Gems.  It’s belly bars at the moment to see how it goes but will be more than happy to put up other items when/if requested.

There are some nice ones – we’re going to put up about a dozen belly bars.  I shall make another posting listing items a bit later.

Enjoy the saturday!

Christening Jewellery and Gifts

Christening braceletJust what do you give a special child that has everything?  Well…everything for their Christening, that is.  After all, often the baby has already been given the classic Christening bangle but there’s a whole lot more.  We at Milton Gems offer a whole range of Christening giftsChristening bracelets, earrings and pendants.

We also had an enquiry this morning from somebody whose niece was being Christened soon and just wanted something a little different – which she got as she bought the child (who was a toddler – not a baby at all) a silver tooth pot for keeping her first tooth in – certainly something the child would grow into.

Another idea might be a silver picture frame to keep a momento of the day.  The last two items weren’t from our Christening range of jewellery but were from our childrens silver collection – we also have a childs gold collection.

Above all, though, enjoy the day and welcome the special little one into the world.

Butterfly Jewellery

Diamond butterfly earringsButterflies have long been a favourite of jewellery makers and there are some beautiful pieces about which have been designed around a butterfly.  Two examples we have is the butterfly earrings (picture to the left) and a butterfly pendant (picture below).  Both are part of the same set and they are made from 9ct yellow gold.  The wings on the butterfly pendant holds 0.06ct worth of diamonds and the butterfly earrings wings also hold 0.06ct (spread over the two earrings, of course).

Click on either of the pictures to take a closer look at the butterflies.  They can be seen in our diamond jewellery category.

Paua butterfly pendantUpdated…

We have just added some more butterfly pieces onto the site.  An example can be seen to the left – a silver pendant with paua shell.  The blues and greens from this beautiful New Zealand shell makes for an attractive piece of jewellery.  You can see more of the butterfly pendant here.

All the new bangles are of silver without any gemstones – simple says a lot, often, and are certainly stylish.

We have two pages of silver bangles – bangle page 1 and bangle page 2.  Check them out.

Red Gemstone Jewellery

Gold garnet pendantMy mum, bless her, loved red and putting on some of these pieces made me think of her.  When I was growing up I remember her wearing jewellery with red gemstones – mainly garnet and ruby.  Little did I know that I would be in the business, so to speak, and able to give her some really nice pieces.

Anyway…ruby jewellery and garnet jewellery – ruby is the birthstone of july and has a lucious red colour which many people love.  Garnet is the birthstone of january and is often associated with vintage / Victorian jewellery.  As always, if you want to see our gemstone categories click here.

White Gold, Amethyst, Diamond, Pink Sapphire and Iolite Pendant

White gold pendantAs promised in my last post, here’s an example of gold jewellery.  This pendant was ordered this morning and I liked it enough to put up here.

As you can see, it’s 9ct white gold and it’s studded with multiple stones -  amethyst, diamond, pink sapphire and iolite going from clear to purple and it’s effective, I must say.

The chain isn’t included in the price but there’s the option of one (we often don’t include the cost of the chain as many people have chains already and would rather have the price lower than have yet another chain that they don’t need).

The size of the pendant is 27mm x 9mm (approx) and it weight 1.2grams.  It is hallmarked.  You can see the pendant on this pendant page.

Gold Jewellery

Gold jewellery ladyReading our jewellery blog this morning I realised that I haven’t written much about our range of gold jewellery.  True, we have more silver but our range of gold is growing – especially as we’ve been putting on quite a few pieces recently from a new supplier.  We wanted to offer some more birthstone jewellery and to do that we required another source of the gemstones.  You can see more from the gold supplier here.  They are all 9ct gold pieces but there is a choice of white or yellow gold which is often asked for.

In the gold jewellery category, we have a choice of gold earrings and gold pendants – we shall be adding more in the near future as there are some nice bracelets and necklaces.

Peridot Jewellery

Peridot earringsPeridot is the brithstone for august.  With a full range of greens, peridot is often thought of as a summer gemstone but has been proven to be popular all year round.

Peridot jewellery has been known to have been around for over 4,000 years where it was mined on an island in the Red Sea.  Luckily new mines have been found relatively recently so we can still have the beautiful green peridot jewellery for our jewellery.

Citrine Jewellery

Citrine pendantThe gemstone citrine is also called golden quartz and is named after the French word for lemon – citron.  Citrine comes in many different shades from almost transparent with a touch of yellow to almost browny orange.

Our small but growing range of citrine jewellery includes pendants and earrings and is often included with other gemstones such as smoky quartz, tourmaline, etc.

As always, the page of our jewellery sorted by types of gemstone is here.

Marcasite Dragonfly Brooch

Marcasite dragonfly broochThis marcasite brooch is so attractive, we decided to put it in the logo of Milton Gems.  One of the more attractive pieces of marcasite jewellery, the dragonfly wings are white mother of pearl and set in sterling silver.

Brooches are becoming more and more popular so take another look at our marcasite brooches category.

I realised I haven’t put the marcasite dragonfly measurements in – it’s approx 57mm from wing tip to wing tip, 48mm tip to tail and weight approx 13g

Amber Jewellery

Amber pendantToday has been a busy day – we have been putting on a large amount of gold jewellery – mainly gold pendants and gold earrings.

Some of the items that caught my eye were made from amber.  Personally, I like it – perhaps it’s the thought that it’s resin from trees that are millions of years old or perhaps it’s just that the colours are all different.

Anyway, we have put up an amber jewellery page – have a look at some items and see what you think.

Amber pendantAmber stud earringsCognac amber stud earrings

There’s only a small amber jewellery selection at the moment but it’s very much of a tester.  If it proves popular than expect to see more amber from us – both gold amber and silver amber.

Rose Quartz Jewellery

Amethyst and rose quartz earringsThe pretty pink of rose quartz jewellery can range from almost transparent to translucent and is the pink variety of quartz.  Normally, rose quartz is too cloudy to be used as a gemstone but it’s this cloudyness which attracts fans of rose quartz jewelry.

All of the rose quartz jewellery  pieces we sell at Milton Gems are also with other stones – such as amethyst in the earrings above.  The different types of quartz complement each other.

Childrens Bangles

Girls silver bangleChildren’s bangles have proven to be extremely popular.  We have christening bangles and general christening jewellery which are great – they’re generally unadorned or very simple but general bangles for kids are usually more colourful.  Take a look at our silver childrens and babies bangles here and the gold babies and childrens bangles here.

Birthstone Jewellery

Turquoise birthstone - decemberAs you no doubt know, each month of the year has a gemstone associated with it called birthstones.  For example, the birthstone for december is turquoise (which is why the image to the left is there).

So often, people like to give gifts to loved ones that have that gemstone in it – it’s a nice way to tell someone that you’ve gone that little bit further to make them feel special and it’s appreciated.

At the moment – november - the birthstone is citrine – a nice yellow coloured gemstone which is different from the run-of-the-mill gems.  Aquamarine is the birth stone for march and amethyst is the february birthstone.

If you want to find out what the birthstone is for a particular month then our birthstone jewellery page has a list of them.  Or, if you want to check out a particular gemstone, you can see them categorised.  Enjoy the birthstone jewellery!

Marcasite and Onyx Pendant

Onyx and Marcasite pendantThis marcasite pendant was posted out this morning and I thought it was interesting enough to write a little review of it.  As may have been noticed, I like marcasite.  It’s certainly coming into fashion a bit more recently and this pendant is a good example of the vintage jewellery style.

As can be seen in the image, it’s an oval pendant with an oval of onyx in the centre (the size of the onyx is 28mm x 16mm approx) and around the enge is silver and marcasite.  The total size is 47mm (this includes the bale) but without it’s 37mm x 23mm approx.  It’s hefty and weighs in at 7.5 grams and it is hallmarked with 925 on the back to prove it’s sterling silver (as is all our jewellery unless clearly marked.

It’s shown with an organza ribbon which isn’t included in the price but you can choose it as an option – as you can choose regular silver chains too.

All in all, this marcasite and onyx pendant is looking good in black.  Click here to check out the black pendant or click here to see more marcasite pendants.  See all of our silver jewellery here.

Kit Heath Jewellery

Kit Heath jewellery logoOne of my favourite silver jewellery designers is Kit Heath.  Part of a brother and sister run design team, Kit (and Katie!) creates stunning designer silver jewellery which regular wins awards and is often at the top of the jewellery design charts because they produce simple, beautiful and fashionable jewellery.

We have been collecting a selection of their jewellery for a while now but have only just created a specific Kit Heath jewellery category – previous readers of this jewellery blog will know that I like my categories simply because it makes it so much easier for people to find just what they want!

Some of our most popular pieces of jewellery are below.

Kit heath bangle – this is part of a set which we call “artistic twisted”.  It is the most popular of the Kit Heath jewellery pieces by far.  Can be found in the Kit Heath bangle category.

Kit Heath artistic drop earringsKit Heath drop earrings – again, part of the “artistic twisted” Kit Heath set, these are our most popular silver drop earrings.  Can be found in the Kit Heath earrings category.

Kit Heath silver pendantKit Heath pendant – the third part of the “artistic twisted” Kit Heath set, take a look at our sterling silver pendant.  This is found in the Kit Heath pendant category.

We also have a Kit Heath bracelet category as well as a Kit Heath necklace category – I’ll be posting more information on them shortly.

I hope you enjoy the designer ranges – Kit Heath sure has beautiful pieces.

Christening Bracelets

Silver christening braceletChristening bracelets are coming almost as popular as christening bangles these days and people are certainly choosing them when they are thinking of getting a present for a babies christening.

Our D for Diamonds range have silver christening bracelets and 9ct gold, too and some have the ability to have a message/name engraved on it which is often thought of as a nice touch.  All of our range has a single diamond.

Iolite Jewellery

Iolite pendantIolite has a pretty blue/purple colour although it has extreme pleochroism which means that the colour you see changes depends on the angle you look at the iolite which caused people to call iolite “water sapphire”.

Iolite used to be used by the Vikings – they would look through it towards the sun to help determine their position while at sea without risking going blind and being more accurate than the naked eye.

We at Milton Gems has a small range of iolite jewelleryearrings and pendants in white and yellow gold.  Take a look and see what you think about iolite jewellery.

Silver Jewellery

Silver jewellerySilver jewellery has been popular for thousands of years but it has increased in popularity recently for a number of reasons.  Silver being cheaper than gold, is often used to make more experimental jewellery – with gold jewellery, the cost of the finished pieces means that they need to be sure that the piece will sell in the current market so more conservative/mainstream designs are created.  Silver jewellery is the opposite – which is one of the reasons why the more striking pieces of jewellery are silver.

We at Milton Gems especially love silver jewellery – certainly, we have gold but silver is where our heart is.

Silver pendantSilver necklace

So, when you see any jewellery listed on our site – unless it’s specifically in a gold category, it’s silver.  For example, the children’s jewellery is silver as is bridesmaid jewellery and marcasite jewellery is to.

Enjoy the silver – we do!

Jewellery categorised by gemstone/material

Just a quick post.  To try and make things a little easier for browsers, I have categoriesed jewellery pieces by the type of gemstone/material they have so, for example, if there is a silver bracelet with green agate, mother of pearl and onyx, I would put that bracelet in each of those categoties (but no…we don’t have any onyx, mother of pearl and green agate bracelets!).  I hope people find that useful.  The jewellery category list is here.

Children’s Jewellery

Children's jewelleryChildrens jewellery are one of the types of jewellery that we decided to concentrate on when Milton Gems was created and the suppliers that we decided to use give you the opportunity to have richly coloured pieces of silver or gold jewellery or plainer items that would be perfect.

We have seperated our collection into two pieces – silver children’s jewellery and gold children’s jewellery.  We have a boys range of jewellery which we are adding to as we speak.

We have found our little silver clipon charms to be popular (see the purple handbag below).  We also have other items such as silver picture frames (the one below comes with a musical presentation box) and also a first tooth container – saved as a precious momento.

So, feel free to check out our children’s jewellery – click and have a browse.

Silver Christening Bangle

Silver christening bangleWe have quite a few christening bangles at Milton Gems but this one is by far the most popular and, to be honest, I can see why.  It’s simple – circular with a cross and in the centre of the cross, a single diamond giving it that extra special touch as it glints in the light.  The diameter is 40mm and is 4mm wide while the circumference is 125mm.  The diamond is 0.01ct in size and all is hallmarked sterling silver.  The christening bangle is adjustable – you can slide it to increase the size to fit perfectly on the babies little wrist.  We would estimate that it fits babies that are between 0 and 24 months old (depends on the baby, of course).  The baby bangle comes from the range of D for Diamonds and, as such, comes with designer packaging of a lilac coloured box with a gift card.

Click here to see more of the silver christening bangle or click here to see our range of christening bangles.

Gold and diamond butterfly pendant

Gold and diamond butterfly pendantWe had a call from a very nice lady enquiring about our gold butterfly pendant (the one pictured to the left) and we chatted about it and she bought it over the phone (we’re not just an online store – we are real people and take orders over the ‘phone if you’re worried about internet security – our phone number is 01205 724103).

It’s certainly a nice little gold pendant – certainly not a bling-bling piece being approx 11.7mm x 15mm and weighing 1.2g.  It’s 9ct gold and has 0.06cts worth of diamond.  The butterfly pendant doesn’t include a gold chain because, as I explained to the lady, a lot of people have chains already in their jewellery collection so instead of getting yet another chain they would never use, we price the pendants up without the chain and if they want to add a chain – they have that option.

So, if you would like to have a butterfly pendant like this then take a closer look.

Marcasite Flower Brooch

Marcasite flower broochAs I recently threatened, I am starting to write a little bit of information about items we have sold in the day.  I actually get the piece out, look at it and describe it as much as I can.

This marcasite brooch is, as you can see, shaped like a flower.  Set in silver, the marcasite is complemented by grey shell in the leaves which gives it a completely different texture.  One thing I did notice is that when I took it out into natural light, it had the effect of bringing on different colours – very effective.

The size is 45mm at its widest point i.e. from the top of one leaf to the bottom of another.  The weight is 15.5grams (approx).

You can, of course, see more of our marcasite jewellery here including some extremely nice marcasite pendants.

Daily Jewellery Review

Hi

I’ve thought that it would be a good idea to everyday take an item that we’ve sold and give a sort of a review on it.  Most of the items on Milton Gems have a bit of a short description but we rely on the images to give you information.  I’m going to try and change that a little here with the reviews.

I’m not 100% sure on what I’m going to write about next – perhaps a nice marcasite pendant

Martin

Christening jewellery

Christening jewellery imageProud parents don’t have many days more memorable than when their baby or child is christened.  All pure and angelic and new to the world getting ready to enjoy their future journey in life.

And we have a range of christening jewellery that is perfectly suited to the great day.  Categorised, have a look and find the perfect christening bangle, christening pendant, christening earrings or christening bracelet.

Our selection is in gold, white gold and silver and we also have christening jewellery for boys or girls – they have different coloured packaging so be sure to let us know if the jewellery is for either!

Silver christening bangleOur most popular silver christening bangle is the one to the right – it has a single diamond in the centre of a cross.  It has an adjustable slider which allows it to adjust to the size of the child to be christened.  40mm in diameter, 4mm in width and has a circumference of 125mm.  it would suit a child of 0 – 24 months.

Included with this bangle is a lilac box and a gift card and you can choose to have it giftwrapped, if you like.  Click here to go straight to the silver christening bangle.

Fancy a silver bangle? More added!

Silver bangleI was looking at Milton Gems this morning and I realised that we didn’t have a silver bangle category and, to be honest, I didn’t know why.  We have bangles on the site (in bridesmaid jewellery, for example) but not a specific silver bangle category.  So, without further ado, I went about and collected some of our most popular and put them in their own section of the website.

The majority are from the designer Kit Heath and we even have a marcasite bangle which has proven popular with people who like the dark effect with silver.

As always, if there’s a specific type of jewellery you’d like to see on the site, contact us and we will see what we can do.

Just what is marcasite?

Marcasite ladyMarcasite is, to mineralogists, “an unstable form of iron sulphide crystallising in the rhombic system”.  I thought I’d get that out ASAP as it doesn’t mean much to me.

What does mean something to me is that it’s a grey metal that is used in the creation of jewellery especially with silver.  It was extremely popular in Victorian times and is still used now and a lot of designers use it for a retro / vintage look which it’s extremely good at.

Due to me liking the look of marcasite jewellery, I’ve gone out of my way to bring in a collection from our suppliers.  We have categorised it for easy browsing – the categories are:
