Iolite has a pretty blue/purple colour although it has extreme pleochroism which means that the colour you see changes depends on the angle you look at the iolite which caused people to call iolite “water sapphire”.
Iolite used to be used by the Vikings - they would look through it towards the sun to help determine their position while at sea without risking going blind and being more accurate than the naked eye.
