Pearls are a purely organic gem and are created when an oyster covers a foreign object (such as a grain of sand) with beautiful layers of nacre. Long ago, pearls were important financial assets and comparable in price to real estate, as thousands of oysters had to be searched for only one pearl. They were rare because they were created only by chance but these days, freshwater pearls are created when foreign bodies have bene placed in oysters with the sole reason of having a pearl created.
